Naitasiri is set to end their 15-year Skipper Cup drought on Saturday as they prepare to face Malolo in the final at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. The Highlanders last lifted the Skipper Cup trophy in 2010 after a narrow victory over Nadroga and have been striving for another title since then, having reached the final four times in the intervening years but falling short each time.
The most recent of those losses came in 2022 when Naitasiri narrowly lost to Nadi by just two points. This year, however, there is renewed hope as they head into the final following their successful defense of the Farebrother Trophy earlier in the month. Naitasiri’s team manager Pena Qaia emphasized the importance of focusing on the task at hand and not underestimating their opponents, who have proven themselves formidable throughout the competition.
“We asked the boys to raise up as representatives of our proud province and give our fans a victory to celebrate,” said Qaia, reflecting on the team’s recent victory over Tailevu. Despite a challenging first half where Tailevu dominated, Naitasiri showcased their experience and composure, turning the match around in the final quarter to secure a spot in the final.
The anticipated final will kick off at 3 PM, following the Marama Championship match between Suva and Namosi at 11 AM, and a U20 final featuring Nadi and Naitasiri at 1 PM. The build-up to the finals has been marked by excitement and a strong community spirit, as fans look forward to witnessing what promises to be an exhilarating day of provincial rugby in Fiji. With both Naitasiri and Malolo vying for victory, the stakes have never been higher, and the hopes of their communities rest on this momentous occasion.
