Naitasiri Rugby Union’s treasurer, Meli Rokobici, has disclosed that the union faces significant weekly expenses, totaling around $10,000, to adequately prepare players for their Skipper Cup matches. When traveling to Vanua Levu, these costs escalate to approximately $14,000. Rokobici shared these figures during a recent interview on FBC’s i-Taukei sports show ‘Na Waqe,’ highlighting the financial challenges the team currently experiences.
He pointed out that the funding received from the Fiji Rugby Union has diminished compared to previous years, which has added to the financial strain on the union. Nonetheless, Naitasiri’s leadership remains committed to supporting their players in reaching notable performance goals, particularly as they work to defend the Farebrother trophy.
At the season’s outset, the team established objectives for both their men’s and women’s squads. Rokobici noted that maintaining possession of the Farebrother trophy is paramount, stating, “We have achieved our first target, and now we look forward to achieving our second target this.”
In response to the financial difficulties, the union has established the Koicolo Rakavi Cooperative, which aims to ease some of the financial burdens. As for the sporting calendar, the team is gearing up for their semifinal showdown against Tailevu scheduled for tomorrow at 3 PM, with Malolo facing Nadi at 1 PM. Fans can watch the live broadcasts on FBC TV.
The enduring enthusiasm for rugby in the Naitasiri community highlights the vital role of teamwork and resilience as the union navigates its current challenges. With community support and unwavering determination, there is a hopeful outlook for the team’s continued growth and success in the competition.
