Naitasiri Set to End 15-Year Skipper Cup Drought in Fiji Final

Naitasiri eyes 15-year wait in Skipper Cup final against Malolo in Suva

Naitasiri is poised to break a 15-year drought in the Skipper Cup as they gear up to compete against Malolo in the final at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva on Saturday. The Highlanders last claimed the trophy in 2010 with a narrow win over Nadroga, and since then, they have reached the finals on four occasions but have not secured another title.

The latest disappointment came in 2022 when Naitasiri lost by just two points to Nadi. However, this year’s campaign has rekindled hope among the players and their supporters, especially after successfully defending the Farebrother Trophy earlier this month. Team manager Pena Qaia stressed the importance of staying focused and not underestimating Malolo, a team that has displayed strength throughout the competition.

“We’ve motivated the boys to step up as representatives of our proud province and bring home a victory for our fans to celebrate,” said Qaia, highlighting their recent comeback against Tailevu. Although they faced a tough first half, Naitasiri’s experience allowed them to regain control and clinch their final spot with a solid performance in the latter stages.

The much-anticipated final match is set to kick off at 3 PM, preceded by the Marama Championship clash between Suva and Namosi at 11 AM, and a U20 final featuring Nadi and Naitasiri at 1 PM. The buildup to this significant day has been filled with excitement and community enthusiasm, as fans eagerly anticipate a thrilling showcase of provincial rugby. Both teams are ready to fight for victory, underscoring the high stakes and the shared hopes of their communities on this remarkable occasion.
