The Mineral Resources Department has announced an opportunity for qualified consultants to submit proposals for an Environmental Impact and Damage Assessment (EIDA) focused on the uncontrolled discharge of wastewater affecting the Sabeto River catchment in Nadi. This initiative underscores the department’s commitment to addressing environmental concerns and ensuring the health of vital ecosystems.

In a notice released yesterday, the Department outlined that the selected consultant will conduct an independent and scientific assessment of the current environmental and social damages inflicted by wastewater pollution in the Sabeto River. This comprehensive evaluation will involve establishing baseline conditions for the river system, which includes assessing water quality, biodiversity, and the human uses of the river.

The assessment entails a detailed analysis of various water quality parameters, such as levels of heavy metals, turbidity, and temperature, along with an exploration of the impacts on aquatic life and surrounding ecosystems. It will also consider the well-being of local communities that rely on the river for their livelihoods and domestic needs, focusing on areas such as fishing, agriculture, food security, and household income. Furthermore, the assessment will evaluate potential long-term risks to both human health and the environment posed by the pollution.

The consultant will be expected to quantify the environmental and social losses using recognized valuation methodologies, recommending suitable rehabilitation and restoration strategies as part of the evaluation process. As part of the scope of work, the consultant will develop a river rehabilitation framework, propose mitigation strategies, and suggest transparent monitoring and performance indicators that will facilitate long-term recovery efforts.

The undertaking will be conducted in accordance with the Environment Management Act 2005, aiming to provide scientifically sound findings that will inform government decisions, aid enforcement actions, and contribute to effective remediation planning. The Mineral Resources Department encourages interested consultants with relevant expertise and experience in environmental assessments to apply per the Department’s requirements.

This initiative represents a proactive step towards environmental responsibility, aiming for a healthier ecosystem and the betterment of community livelihoods around the Sabeto River.
