Senior citizens in Nadi are set to experience a positive uplift in both mental and physical health with plans for a new recreational park specifically designed for the elderly, anticipated to break ground this year. Led by Vineel Nand, a passionate advocate against elderly neglect in Fiji, the park aims to create a supportive space for senior citizens.

This innovative project promises to incorporate various features including gaming activities, gentle exercise equipment, comfortable seating areas, and an inviting atmosphere that encourages relaxation and social interaction. Nand has emphasized the pressing need for this initiative by touching on the severe realities faced by the elderly in Fiji. Many seniors experience mental and physical strain from isolation as family dynamics often lead to neglect, leaving them to confront the trials of aging without support.

Nand pointed out a concerning trend where seniors frequently remain silent about the mistreatment they endure from family members, often out of a sense of loyalty. His mission is to ensure that elders can truly enjoy their later years and feel valued within their communities.

When discussing the project’s logistics, Nand mentioned that his team is still in the preliminary stages, with specifics regarding costs and design still to be determined. He noted, “Right now, we do not have expertise in that field for building a recreational park, which is why we will be consulting experts from Australia and New Zealand to guide us on how to develop it.” Despite these challenges, Nand is optimistic that construction will commence within this year.

The project team is actively engaging with the Nadi Town Council to secure the necessary land for this venture and is also seeking sponsorships to help finance the development. In addition, Nand revealed that the Nadi park is part of a broader vision, with plans already in motion to replicate similar initiatives in other towns and cities across the country, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing the lives of elderly citizens throughout Fiji.
