Fiji Airways is currently facing significant disruptions to its evening and overnight flight schedules due to a failure of runway lighting at Nadi International Airport. The incident, which occurred yesterday evening, led to multiple flight delays, diversions, and cancellations.
In a recent statement, Fiji Airways indicated that while the runway lighting has been restored and operations at the airport have resumed, several aircraft and flight crews remain out of position at diversion airports. The airline is actively working to reposition both the aircraft and crew to swiftly reinstate scheduled services.
One notable flight affected was FJ 810 from Nadi to Los Angeles, which faced an 8 hour and 20 minute delay, eventually departing at 6:00 AM this morning. Similarly, flight FJ 393 to Hong Kong was delayed by approximately 6 hours and 55 minutes, with a new departure time set for 6:25 AM.
Fiji Airways has assured affected passengers that its teams are in direct communication to confirm updated travel arrangements, emphasizing their commitment to passenger safety and comfort. “We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this disruption may cause. The safety of our passengers and crew remains our highest priority, and we thank our guests for their understanding,” the airline stated.
Fiji Airports further clarified that as a precautionary safety measure, several inbound flights were diverted according to international aviation safety standards. Diversions affected Fiji Airways flights FJ 950, FJ 960, and FJ 274, which redirected to Nausori International Airport, while flight FJ 910 was diverted to Faleolo International Airport in Samoa. Additionally, two departing flights faced delays, including FJ 413, which left at 8:45 PM instead of the scheduled time, and FJ 915, which was cancelled due to a curfew imposed at Sydney Airport.
As efforts continue to restore full operations, passengers are urged to stay updated on flight statuses and arrangements.
