Police are investigating a tragic road accident in Nadi that led to the death of an 18-year-old student early yesterday morning. Reports indicate that the young man was intoxicated and fell asleep by the roadside when a vehicle, driven by a 43-year-old man, struck him.

Emergency services transported the victim to Nadi Hospital, but he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. This incident has reignited discussions about the critical need for road safety awareness, particularly regarding young individuals and alcohol consumption.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, who is in charge of traffic regulations for the Fiji Police Force, stressed the necessity of avoiding walking on busy streets when under the influence. “When you are intoxicated, please avoid walking along a busy road. You will only put yourself and other road users at risk,” SSP Divuana emphasized, reminding the public of the dangers that impaired judgment can pose.

As the investigation progresses, the driver involved remains in police custody. This unfortunate event serves as a poignant reminder of the potential consequences of reckless behavior, and authorities are hopeful that increasing awareness will help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
