Fiji Airports has awarded a contract valued at $8.1 million to Alstef Group for the upgrade of the Baggage Handling System (BHS) at Nadi International Airport. This significant investment marks one of the most important updates to the airport’s operations in many years.
The partnership with Alstef, a recognized leader in baggage handling solutions, aims to modernize and enhance the efficiency and resilience of the airport’s baggage system. Fiji Airports’ CEO, Mesake Nawari, stated that the upgrades will include the installation of dual conveyor belts at check-in counters to facilitate greater passenger throughput during peak travel periods. Additionally, the upgrade will feature a new outbound screening line equipped with Standard 3 Hold Baggage Screening machines, which comply with both European and US aviation security standards.
Nawari showcased the project’s commitment to delivering a seamless travel experience that bolsters Fiji’s tourism industry, asserting that Nadi International Airport would continue to serve as Fiji’s gateway to the world. The scope of work also includes a phased replacement of existing baggage screening machines, with the first unit expected to arrive in Fiji by the end of the year following its installation in England.
This upgrade aligns with ongoing modernization efforts at the airport, which have included previous contracts for new hold baggage screening machines and passenger boarding aerobridges. Such initiatives reflect Fiji Airports’ broader commitment to enhancing operational efficiency and passenger satisfaction, positioning Nadi International Airport as a prominent aviation hub in the region, thereby contributing positively to Fiji’s economic growth.
As these improvements unfold, they signify a hopeful outlook for the future of travel in Fiji, ensuring that the nation remains an appealing destination for international visitors while enhancing the overall travel experience for local and global passengers alike.
