Villagers from Nabukelevu in Serua are actively seeking to safeguard their environment as they confront unprecedented changes in their highland community. They are increasingly experiencing issues like landslides, unusual flooding, and the loss of native flora and fauna, prompting concern among the residents.

Village headman Mataiasi Toma attributes these environmental challenges to heightened activity in the region. He notes that mineral exploration for gold, copper, and zinc launched in inland Serua in 2016 was suspended in 2023 due to rising environmental concerns. “We are concerned. There may come a time when our children will only hear about these natural resources and never see them,” Toma expressed, highlighting a fear of losing their natural heritage.

Toma also claims that forestry operations are exacerbating problems related to soil stability and water pollution, leading to negative environmental effects that the community never faced before. Serua Provincial Administrator Jona Dalaga has recognized these pressing environmental issues and is advocating for reforestation initiatives as a means to protect the area and restore soil health.

The proactive stance taken by the villagers signifies a growing awareness of the need to balance development with environmental sustainability. Their commitment to preserving their natural resources reflects a hopeful vision for future generations, aiming to ensure that they inherit a healthy environment rich in biodiversity.
