Nabouwalu Township Dream Hit by Floods as Officials Plot Diversion Plan

Nabouwalu Township Progress Hits Flooding Challenge Ahead of 2027-2028 Completion

Work is actively progressing on the new Nabouwalu township in Bua, although the development is facing substantial challenges due to serious flooding issues. Housing and Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa addressed these concerns in Parliament, confirming that the project covers 5.5 hectares and is planned to include 23 commercial lots, four civic lots, four industrial parcels, a government lot, and recreational spaces.

Minister Nalumisa stated that the first phase of development is currently underway, concentrating on seven commercial lots situated along the Nabouwalu Highway. This financial year, a budget of $1.3 million has been allocated to support civic works. However, heavy rains have resulted in the overflow of the Vunivesi Creek, causing significant flooding at the development site and hindering progress.

The minister elaborated on the persistent risk posed by the creek’s overflow during storms. As a proactive response, the ministry has commenced preliminary surveys to reassess the flood-prone area. There is a collaborative effort underway with the Lands Ministry and the Department of Waterways to devise a diversion plan aimed at reducing flooding risks.

Additionally, the project will necessitate the relocation of three families living on the site. Compensation arrangements and necessary service provisions are being managed through the Bua provincial office in coordination with the Tui Vuya. To date, over $3.2 million has been spent on consultancy services, surveys, and preliminary works, with the total project cost estimated at $8.4 million. Completion of the township is expected by the financial year 2027-2028.

The Nabouwalu project exemplifies ongoing efforts to establish the township as a vital urban center, a vision that has faced delays since its initial proposal in 1976. Recent discussions have underscored the necessity for consistent funding and resources to realize this aspiration, affirming the community’s long-held dreams. Despite the hurdles encountered, local leaders remain hopeful about Nabouwalu’s transformation into a burgeoning township, which aims to offer substantial benefits to its residents.
