Nabouwalu Township Dream Hit by Floods as Officials Plot Diversion Plan

Work is actively underway on the new Nabouwalu township in Bua, though it faces significant hurdles due to flooding issues. Housing and Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa recently informed Parliament that the development encompasses 5.5 hectares, set to include 23 commercial lots, four civic lots, four industrial parcels, a government lot, and recreational areas.

Minister Nalumisa confirmed that phase one of the project is in progress, focusing primarily on seven commercial lots along the Nabouwalu Highway. This financial year, a budget of $1.3 million has been allocated to facilitate civic works. However, the project has encountered setbacks as heavy rainfall has led to the overflowing of Vunivesi Creek, inundating the development site.

The minister explained that the creek’s overflow during downpours poses a recurrent risk to the project, prompting the ministry to initiate preliminary survey work to reassess the creek area. They are collaborating with the Lands Ministry and the Department of Waterways to implement plans for a new diversion to mitigate flooding.

Additionally, the project involves relocating three families from the township site. Compensation and necessary services are being coordinated through the Bua provincial office and the Tui Vuya. To date, over $3.2 million has been expended on consultancy, surveys, and preliminary works, with the entire project estimated to cost $8.4 million. Completion is anticipated by the 2027-2028 financial year.

This project reflects ongoing efforts to establish Nabouwalu as a key town, a goal that has encountered delays since its proposal dating back to 1976. Recent discussions have highlighted the importance of securing timely funding and resources for the development, emphasizing the community’s long-held vision. Despite these challenges, leaders remain optimistic about the future of Nabouwalu and its potential transformation into a thriving township that can benefit local residents.
