The newly commissioned Nabouwalu Passenger Services Terminal represents a significant advancement in upgrading transportation infrastructure and service delivery for rural and maritime communities. This development aims to enhance safety, comfort, and dignity for the many passengers who depend on Nabouwalu as a central transport hub.

Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, highlighted that for years, passengers had to endure long waits exposed to the elements without adequate facilities. However, the completion of this $2 million terminal marks a transformative change. Nalumisa emphasized that this project is part of a broader vision to develop Nabouwalu Township and bolster economic opportunities within Bua Province, advocating that rural communities deserve equal access to services as their urban counterparts.

The terminal will also serve as a platform for local businesses, featuring three food kiosks, one handicraft shop, and a hair salon—all operated by local residents from Bua. Nalumisa stated that this initiative initiates a vibrant town center, which will lead to job creation, attract investment, and support the overall growth of the Bua community. He remarked, “When the community grows, families grow. When families grow, Fiji grows.” The presence of a police post and modern facilities will empower travelers, allowing them to journey with confidence and peace of mind.

As the construction phase concludes, Nalumisa outlined the next steps for development in the area. He mentioned that the foreshore lease adjacent to the terminal is currently under review by the Department of Lands, with an advertisement period now underway to address any potential objections prior to lease issuance.

Once the lease is secured, necessary surveys and Environmental Impact Assessments will commence, involving qualified consultants and contractors for engineering and backfilling works. Phase two of the project will see the construction of a covered boardwalk, extending approximately 200 meters to connect the new terminal directly to the jetty, thus enhancing the travel experience, especially during adverse weather conditions. This subsequent phase is estimated to require an investment of around $1.5 million, with a full appraisal to be conducted in line with current market conditions.

This new terminal not only symbolizes progress in transport infrastructure but also fosters hope for economic upliftment and community growth in Bua Province.
