The commissioning of the Nabouwalu Passenger Terminal marks a significant step forward in enhancing maritime travel in the region, according to the Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa. He announced that the next phase of development is set to prioritize safety, accessibility, and comfort for passengers.

During a recent announcement, Minister Nalumisa revealed that the foreshore lease adjacent to the newly opened terminal is currently being processed by the Department of Lands. The advertisement period for this lease is now in progress, allowing for public input and any objections before it is formally granted.

Once the lease is obtained, the Ministry plans to move forward with necessary land surveys and an Environmental Impact Assessment. These steps will facilitate the engagement of qualified consultants and contractors to begin essential engineering and backfilling works for the project’s next stage.

Phase two will involve constructing a 200-meter covered boardwalk that will directly connect the passenger terminal to the jetty. This addition is aimed at improving travel conditions, particularly during adverse weather, making it easier, safer, and more comfortable for commuters. The investment for this phase is projected to be around $1.5 million, with a comprehensive appraisal to be conducted based on current market conditions. This initiative aligns with the vision of creating a fully integrated, modern, and people-centered travel hub at Nabouwalu.

Furthermore, Minister Nalumisa confirmed that plans are also in motion to upgrade the Natovi Passenger Terminal, with construction slated to begin in January 2026. These endeavors reflect a commitment to advancing infrastructure that supports the needs of maritime travelers while fostering regional connectivity.
