The newly built Nabouwalu Passenger Services Terminal is poised to open its doors later this year, marking a vital advancement for travel services in the Bua region of Fiji. Housing and Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa announced that this project is part of an $8.4 million development initiative aimed at bolstering transportation infrastructure and creating economic opportunities for local residents.
The terminal is designed to accommodate 150 passengers and boasts modern facilities that cater to a variety of needs, including features for individuals with disabilities, restrooms, kiosks, ticketing booths, a coffee shop, and offices for the Biosecurity Authority and the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji. Additionally, a police post is included in the terminal’s design to enhance the safety and security of travelers.
Minister Nalumisa emphasized that the opening of the terminal hinges on the contractor obtaining the necessary Completion and Compliance Certificate from relevant authorities, such as the Savusavu Town Council and the Fiji Roads Authority. For the current financial year, the government has allocated $200,000 for operational support for the facility.
In a bid to promote local economic participation, the expressions of interest for the kiosks will prioritize nearby communities, reinforcing the government’s commitment to ensuring that the economic impact of the terminal directly benefits regional residents.
Despite facing delays due to flooding, the timely completion of the terminal represents a “significant milestone” in enhancing transport and economic prospects for the area. This development aligns with other ongoing infrastructure improvements in Fiji, including upgrades at Labasa and Waiqele airports, indicative of a broader commitment to enhancing connectivity across the region. These initiatives highlight a dedicated effort to foster economic growth and improve travel experiences, promising a brighter future for the infrastructure and communities within the Northern Division of Fiji.
