Nabouwalu Terminal Nears Opening, Boosting Northern Fiji Connectivity

The newly constructed Nabouwalu Passenger Services Terminal is set to open its doors before the end of the year, representing a significant step forward for travel services in the Bua region. Housing and Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa announced that the facility, part of an $8.4 million development program, aims to enhance transportation infrastructure and economic opportunities for local communities.

Equipped to accommodate 150 passengers, the terminal comes with modern amenities, including disability-friendly features, restrooms, kiosks, ticketing booths, a coffee shop, and offices for the Biosecurity Authority and Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji. A police post is also incorporated into the design to ensure the safety of travelers.

Minister Nalumisa stated that the terminal’s commissioning depends on the contractor’s acquisition of the Completion and Compliance Certificate from the relevant authorities, including the Savusavu Town Council and Fiji Roads Authority. There has been an allocation of $200,000 for operational support in the current financial year.

To promote local economic involvement, expressions of interest for the kiosks will prioritize communities nearby, reinforcing the government’s commitment to ensuring that the economic benefits of the terminal directly support regional residents.

The terminal’s timely completion, which faced delays due to flooding, marks a “significant milestone” for advancing transport and economic prospects in the area. This development comes alongside similar improvements in Fiji, such as upgrades at Labasa and Waiqele airports, reflecting a broader trend of enhancing connectivity and infrastructure across the region. These initiatives showcase a dedication to fostering economic growth and improving travel experiences, which bodes well for the future of the Northern Division’s infrastructure and local community well-being.
