The inauguration of the Nabouwalu Passenger Terminal signifies a pivotal advancement in improving maritime travel within the region, as highlighted by Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa. In a recent update, Minister Nalumisa disclosed that the foreshore lease for the area adjacent to the newly established terminal is currently being processed by the Department of Lands. The advertisement period for this lease has commenced, allowing the public to provide feedback and voice any objections prior to its official approval.
Following the acquisition of the lease, the Ministry intends to conduct essential land surveys and an Environmental Impact Assessment. These preliminary actions are intended to engage qualified consultants and contractors who will facilitate vital engineering and backfilling works for the upcoming phase of the project.
The second phase will see the construction of a 200-meter covered boardwalk, which will create a direct connection between the passenger terminal and the jetty. This enhancement aims to improve travel experiences, particularly during inclement weather, thereby ensuring a safer and more comfortable journey for commuters. The projected investment for this phase is approximately $1.5 million, with a detailed appraisal to be conducted based on prevailing market conditions. This project aligns seamlessly with the broader vision of establishing a fully integrated, modern, and traveler-focused hub at Nabouwalu.
In addition to these developments, Minister Nalumisa indicated that upgrades to the Natovi Passenger Terminal are also in the pipeline, with construction expected to commence in January 2026.
