The Nabouwalu New Town Development project, with a budget of $8.38 million, has been unveiled in parliament, heralding a significant transformation of 5.5 hectares into a modern township that aims to stimulate economic activity and improve access to essential services. Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa underscored the importance of this initiative, describing it as a major advancement in regional economic growth and infrastructure planning.
Nalumisa remarked, “The Nabouwalu New Town Development will be a catalyst for commerce, services, and community life in the North. It is about creating opportunities, jobs, and better facilities for our people.” The comprehensive development plan will consist of 23 commercial lots for businesses, four civic lots for a market and other public amenities, and one government lot reserved for future governmental offices. Additionally, there will be four industrial lots designed to nurture light industry and encourage economic diversification, alongside a recreational area aimed at enhancing community well-being.
Currently, phase one is making progress with construction focusing on seven commercial lots situated along the busy Nabouwalu Highway. The government has allocated $1.3 million for essential civil works this financial year, with plans to complete the entire project by the financial year 2027–2028. This new township aspires to become a vital economic center for Bua Province and the Northern Division at large.
This project is part of broader efforts to boost infrastructure in Nabouwalu and its neighboring regions, contributing to a hopeful outlook for economic development. Recent infrastructure improvements in Fiji, such as enhancements to key transport terminals and the establishment of new water facilities, further illustrate a commitment to revitalizing the region’s infrastructure, benefitting local commerce and enhancing quality of life.
As the Nabouwalu New Town Development progresses, it is anticipated to create not just immediate job opportunities but also long-lasting benefits for future generations. The initiative showcases a deliberate approach to community planning that emphasizes sustainable growth and local engagement. The government’s proactive stance reflects a dedication to transformative change in Fiji, ensuring residents are equipped with the resources and opportunities essential for a flourishing future.
