The Nabouwalu New Town Development project, valued at $8.38 million, has been officially announced in parliament, setting the stage for a substantial transformation of 5.5 hectares of land into a modern township aimed at boosting economic activity and enhancing access to essential services. Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, emphasized that this initiative represents a significant stride in regional economic growth and infrastructure planning.
“The Nabouwalu New Town Development will be a catalyst for commerce, services, and community life in the North,” Nalumisa stated. “It is about creating opportunities, jobs, and better facilities for our people.” The development plan features 23 commercial lots designated for business, four civic lots intended for a market and public amenities, and one government lot set aside for future government offices. Additionally, the project includes four industrial lots to encourage light industry and foster economic diversification. A dedicated recreational space will also be incorporated to improve the well-being of the community.
Phase one of this ambitious project is already underway, with construction focused on developing seven commercial lots along the bustling Nabouwalu Highway. The government has allocated $1.3 million in the current financial year for critical civil works, projecting a completion timeline for the entire project by the financial year 2027–2028. This burgeoning township aims to position itself as a future economic hub for Bua Province and the broader Northern Division.
The project aligns with recent efforts to enhance infrastructure in Nabouwalu and surrounding areas, fostering optimism for economic growth. Similar developments in Fiji, such as the improvements at key transport terminals and the establishment of new water facilities, signal a broader trend towards revitalizing the region’s infrastructure, which supports both local commerce and overall quality of life.
As the Nabouwalu New Town Development unfolds, it is expected to create not only immediate job opportunities but also long-term benefits for generations to come, highlighting a thoughtful approach to community planning that prioritizes sustainable growth and local engagement. The proactive measures by the government reflect a commitment to transformative change in Fiji, ensuring that residents have access to the resources and opportunities necessary for a thriving future.
