The village of Nabouciwa in Tailevu is proudly marking an important advancement in disaster preparedness and living conditions with the official opening of a new evacuation center and ablution block. This significant event was inaugurated by the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka, aiming to provide villagers with secure shelter and enhanced sanitation during emergencies.
The total investment for these essential projects stands at $101,652.84, with the evacuation center costing $52,359.43 and the ablution block valued at $49,293.41. The funding was obtained from the Ministry, while the construction was a collaborative endeavor involving CCD Carpenters and the local community, who actively participated by providing labor.
During the ceremony, Minister Ditoka reaffirmed the government’s ongoing commitment to improving disaster readiness in rural areas, stating, “These facilities not only provide a safe refuge during cyclones but also reflect our ongoing effort to build resilient, sustainable, and inclusive communities across Fiji.”
Lusia Mateni, a representative from the Soqosoqo Vakamarama of Nabouciwa, expressed her heartfelt thanks to the ministry for its support, emphasizing the happiness these new facilities bring to the 34 households within the village. She mentioned that these projects replace an aging community hall from 1972, which had experienced considerable damage from various storms over the years.
Mateni highlighted that the new facilities grant families peace of mind and enhance access to clean water and sanitation—essential components for daily life and disaster readiness. The inauguration not only improves safety and comfort but also marks a hopeful transformation for the community, enabling residents to feel better prepared for future natural disasters.
This initiative reflects a broader trend in Fiji, where communities such as Naivakacau and Daku Village have also established or upgraded evacuation centers to strengthen their disaster response capabilities. The government’s emphasis on enhancing infrastructure for disaster preparedness is fostering a safer future for vulnerable communities across the nation, symbolizing resilience and hope amidst the challenges presented by climate change.
