Mystics Shake Up Roster: Aaliyah Edwards Traded to Sun in Bold Move

The Washington Mystics announced on Thursday that sophomore player Aaliyah Edwards has been traded to the Connecticut Sun in exchange for Jacy Sheldon. This trade follows the recent departure of All-Star player Brittney Sykes, who was traded to the Seattle Storm.

Edwards, who was selected 6th overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft after playing at UConn, has averaged 4.9 points and 3.3 rebounds per game this season. Unfortunately, she was sidelined for several games earlier in the season due to a back injury.

The Mystics’ current record stands at 13-16, prompting changes in the roster, especially after acquiring rookies and veterans to strengthen their post play. This also aligns with the team’s strategic adjustments after recent acquisitions.

In addition to her on-court contributions, Edwards has made a positive impact off the court by supporting local education initiatives, such as donating to STEM resources for elementary students in Ward 8.

Washington’s General Manager, Jamila Wideman, expressed gratitude for Edwards’ contributions, highlighting her professionalism and dedication. “We appreciate everything that Aaliyah brought to our organization… and wish her the best,” Wideman stated.

Looking ahead, the Mystics are well-positioned for the future as they currently own six picks in the upcoming 2026 WNBA Draft, including three first-round selections, which could significantly bolster their roster moving forward.

This trade marks a new chapter for both Edwards and the Mystics, paving the way for new opportunities.
