The Ministry of Fisheries has initiated an investigation into a troubling fish die-off in Kadavu, prompted by reports and photographs of deceased reef fish discovered in several villages along the Nasegai and Nabukelevu-i-Ra coastlines, an event that emerged during the first week of February.

Dr. Victor Bonito from Reef Explorer Fiji, who lives in Votua in the Tikina Korolevu-i-wai area of Nadroga-Navosa, has noted that similar mass fish mortality events have occurred in marine protected zones along the Coral Coast. He pointed to ongoing severe coral bleaching affecting the region’s shallow reefs as a potential factor contributing to these distressing occurrences.

In response to this alarming situation, the Ministry of Fisheries is urging coastal communities to report any new instances of dead fish. To ensure public health and safety, officials are advising against the consumption, sale, or feeding of deceased fish to animals.

The investigation emphasizes the critical need to monitor marine ecosystems and address the challenges they face, highlighting the essential role of community awareness and action in conserving local aquatic environments. Such efforts are vital as preserving biodiversity not only supports the health of the oceans but also sustains the livelihoods of those who depend on these resources. The hope is that through collective vigilance, the local environment can be protected and restored.
