The Suva Magistrates Court has remanded Shonal Sharma, a 40-year-old General Manager, as it deliberates on serious charges relating to the importation of illegal drugs. Sharma was charged following the arrival of a shipment labeled “Smoke Machine” from Brazil on October 27, 2025, which was found to contain a white powdered substance weighing 640 grams.
During the court session, the police prosecution confirmed that they had provided all necessary disclosures to Sharma’s defense team and did not oppose the bail application. However, they called for stringent conditions should bail be granted. The defense proposed to accept strict terms, including a cash bail of $5,000, two sureties, the surrender of travel documents, and daily check-ins at the nearest police station.
Magistrate Sufia Hamza decided to keep Sharma in custody while preparing for the bail hearing scheduled for tomorrow. This incident is part of a broader initiative by law enforcement in Fiji to combat the rising issue of drug trafficking, which has seen a significant increase in recent years.
