In a puzzling situation unfolding in New Jersey, large aerial drones have been spotted flying at night across central and northern regions since mid-November, raising concerns among locals who have shared videos on social media. With no clear understanding of who is operating these drones, local and state officials are calling for answers. New York and New Jersey lawmakers recently sent a letter to officials at the FBI, FAA, and DHS, urging them to provide details on the drone activity affecting the communities.

The DHS has stated that it is currently unclear who is behind the drone operations; however, state agencies in New Jersey are not involved. Investigations are ongoing, as federal authorities work to determine the operators. The drones in question are believed to be significantly larger than standard commercial drones, which raises questions about why they haven’t been tracked down yet, despite regulations that mandate registration and Remote Identification technology for larger drones.

Notably, the FBI has confirmed that there are no credible threats associated with these drone sightings. White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby pointed out that some reports may have mistaken lawful aircraft for drones. However, this response drew criticism from local leaders, such as Mine Hill’s Mayor Sam Morris, who challenged the government’s dismissal of residents’ concerns.

Per legal regulations, shooting down drones is illegal and poses safety risks, making it also a complicated matter. The DHS pointed out that engaging in non-lethal methods to disable drones requires advanced technology. Furthermore, any drone heavier than 0.55 pounds must be registered with the FAA, and any operator must abide by strict regulations regarding operation times and locations.

If residents observe what they consider suspicious drone activity, the DHS recommends notifying local authorities. Individuals in New Jersey can contact the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness for assistance.

Though the current situation is uncertain and has caused unrest, it demonstrates the increasing frequency of drone usage and the call for greater awareness and regulation in aerial operations. As individuals and officials alike seek clarity, the entire situation serves as a prompt for further discussions about drone regulations and their implications for safety and privacy in communities. This could ultimately lead to stronger oversight and collaborative efforts between authorities and residents, ensuring a safer environment for everyone.
