These drones, which some observers believe may be larger than typical recreational models, have reportedly been seen almost nightly since mid-November, with notable activity observed near the Picatinny Arsenal and even near President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster.
Chief of Police Joseph Orlando of Florham Park expressed concern in a social media post regarding these drone activities, labeling them as “nefarious in nature.” New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy also addressed the situation, reassuring the public that, as of now, there is no known threat. However, he noted an increase in sightings, with 49 reported on December 8 alone.
Despite ongoing investigations by the FBI and other federal agencies, the identity of those operating the drones remains a mystery. Some local officials, including Congressman Jeff Van Drew, have suggested possible connections to foreign entities, although Pentagon representatives have dismissed these claims, asserting there is no evidence linking the drones to foreign sources.
Potential concerns are heightened by the drones’ characteristics, as they are suspected to be large—up to 6 feet in diameter—and able to fly extended periods, reportedly for 6-7 hours over distances of up to 15 miles. Residents have also reported that the drones could be intentionally avoiding detection, as they sometimes operate with their lights off.
