An unsettling series of drone sightings has emerged across New York and Philadelphia, coinciding with an ongoing FBI investigation into similar occurrences reported in New Jersey over the past month. Residents in various counties of New Jersey have noted clusters of drones since mid-November, with sightings recently extending to areas of Pennsylvania and Staten Island.

Many locals have taken to social media, sharing videos that seem to depict these mysterious drones in flight. The FBI’s Newark office has stated that it is actively investigating the situation and is looking for help from the public to gather more information. The agency noted, “Witnesses have spotted clusters that resemble drones and possibly fixed-wing aircraft.”

To maintain safety during the investigation, the Federal Aviation Administration has introduced temporary flight restrictions in specific areas, including over the Picatinny Arsenal military base and the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster.

While the precise origin of these drone clusters is yet to be determined, state authorities and elected officials assure the public that there is no immediate threat. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has been in touch with Department of Homeland Security officials and local authorities to monitor the situation closely, asserting that “there is no known threat to the public at this time.”

In light of the persistent sightings, a group of 20 mayors from Morris County sent a letter to Governor Murphy demanding a comprehensive investigation into the drones and better communication with local law enforcement. They expressed significant concern over the “ongoing nighttime drone flights” that have heightened anxiety amongst the county’s 500,000 residents.

Addressing the drone activity over Staten Island, Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis has called for the FAA to enforce temporary drone flight restrictions and has requested urgent briefings from Homeland Security and the FBI.

In a worrying incident two weeks ago, drones interfered with a medical helicopter’s ability to rescue an injured individual following a car crash in New Jersey. Additionally, Florham Park Police Chief Joseph Orlando has expressed concern over the drones appearing near critical infrastructure, including water reservoirs and military installations, stating that while no immediate threat has been confirmed, the nature of their presence appears suspicious.

Authorities have urged vigilance among residents, encouraging them to report any drone sightings directly to the FBI.

As the investigation unfolds, it is vital for community members to unite in reporting any unusual activities, reinforcing a collaborative approach to enhancing safety and security in the region. This proactive stance will play an essential role in ensuring that any potential threats are swiftly identified and addressed, ultimately fostering a sense of community resilience in the face of uncertainty.
