Hannah Kobayashi, a 30-year-old woman from Hawaii who had been missing, has recently returned to the U.S. and is now becoming aware of the extensive media attention surrounding her case. In a letter shared through her aunt, Larie Pidgeon, Kobayashi expressed her surprise at the situation and stated that she had just returned from Mexico.

Kobayashi, who missed her connecting flight to New York City on November 8 after arriving at Los Angeles International Airport, caused concern among her family when they lost communication with her a few days later. Her family reported her missing on November 13, and the Los Angeles Police Department took control of the investigation two days later.

There was particular concern after security footage revealed an unidentified man with her in Los Angeles, but police indicated they found no evidence of any wrongdoing. According to authorities, it appeared that Kobayashi chose to remain in Los Angeles and sever communication voluntarily. After missing her flight, she had her luggage sent back to Los Angeles International Airport.

On November 12, investigators confirmed she crossed into Mexico at the San Ysidro pedestrian crossing. Although her decision to travel was her choice, authorities encouraged her to reconnect with her worried family, who had traveled to Los Angeles for the search.

Tragically, during the family’s efforts to locate her, her father died by suicide near the airport on November 24. Recently, it was announced that Kobayashi had been found safe, and her family expressed gratitude for her well-being.

In her statement, Kobayashi emphasized her intention to focus on healing, personal peace, and creativity moving forward. She also expressed deep appreciation for the support she received from her family and the community during this challenging time.

This situation highlights the importance of mental health and communication within families, particularly during distressing times. If anyone finds themselves facing mental health challenges, there are resources available to provide support and guidance.

For those in crisis, support is readily accessible through the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988, or by calling the previous National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255. There are also options to text HOME to 741741 or visit SpeakingOfSuicide.com/resources for further assistance.
