Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently expressed controversial views regarding his estranged transgender daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson, whom he claimed was “killed” after receiving gender-affirming care. During an interview with psychologist and conservative commentator Jordan Peterson, Musk vowed to “destroy the woke mind virus,” describing gender-reassignment surgery as “child mutilation and sterilization.”
Musk shared that Wilson, who came out as transgender at age 16, received gender-affirming care during the pandemic. He reflected on what he perceived as being misled about his child’s needs during a time of confusion related to COVID-19, claiming he was urged to sign documents regarding medical care for Wilson out of fear for her safety.
Musk characterized the medical procedures available to minors as inappropriate, stating that it is done to children who cannot provide informed consent. He agreed with Peterson, labeling those who promote such procedures as deserving imprisonment. Musk also asserted that he was not properly informed that puberty blockers are essentially sterilization drugs, although it is noted that such treatments do not inherently affect fertility.
“I was tricked into doing this,” Musk lamented, expressing grief over what he feels he has lost with his son’s transition. He referred to the practice of “deadnaming,” indicating the emotional toll it takes when a child transitions.
These remarks come shortly after Musk announced his companies, including Tesla and SpaceX, would relocate to Texas due to California legislation limiting parental notification regarding student gender identity. Musk has faced allegations of transphobia in the past and has adopted more right-leaning political views in recent years.
In 2022, Wilson sought a name change and a new birth certificate, stating in court documents her desire to completely sever ties with her father. Musk has attributed the rift in their relationship to her education at a progressive school, suggesting it has influenced her views and actions against him.
