Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently expressed controversial views about his transgender daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson, during an interview with psychologist and conservative figure Jordan Peterson. He claimed that his daughter was “killed” after receiving gender-affirming care and vowed to “destroy the woke mind virus.”
Musk, who oversees multiple companies, described gender-reassignment surgery as “child mutilation and sterilization.” He recounted how Wilson, who transitioned at 16 during the pandemic, was subjected to gender-affirming procedures without his full understanding. He stated, “I was essentially tricked into signing documents for one of my older boys,” referring to Wilson, who has since distanced herself from her father’s surname.
He claimed that he was pressured by the potential risk of suicide during a time of confusion brought on by the pandemic. Musk stated that the practices occur “to children who are far below the age of consent” and agreed with Peterson that it is “incredibly evil,” suggesting that promoters of such procedures should face imprisonment. Musk further stated he was not informed that puberty blockers served as “sterilization drugs,” despite the fact that puberty blockers do not affect fertility on their own.
Musk remarked on losing his son due to the transition, noting the term “deadnaming,” which signifies a loss of identity. His comments coincided with his announcement that companies like X and SpaceX would relocate to Texas, partly in response to California’s AB1955, a law regarding transgender rights in schools. Musk has faced criticism for allegedly promoting anti-trans sentiments in the past.
Wilson applied for a name change and a new birth certificate in 2022, expressing her desire to sever ties with Musk completely. According to biographer Walter Isaacson, Musk attributes the estranged relationship to Wilson’s progressive education in Los Angeles, suggesting it influences his “anti-woke sentiments.”
Over recent years, Musk has shifted from his previous center-left position to adopt right-wing perspectives on various issues including diversity and immigration. He recently endorsed Republican candidates, including former President Donald Trump, highlighting his alignment with conservative views on energy policies.
