Musical Memories: Fitzie’s Year in Review

Good morning and welcome to Fitzie’s Wrapped!

In last week’s edition, I shared my frustrations about Spotify’s Wrapped feature. However, today I’m excited to present my personal highlights from the year!

Traditionally, I enjoy showcasing the records I’ve bought and the concerts I’ve attended. This year, although my vinyl purchases were fewer, there were still memorable moments, especially from the concerts I attended.

Let’s dive in!

Fitzie’s Favourite Purchase: Haim, “Women in Music Part III” on yellow vinyl

This album has quickly become one of my favorites, and I’ve played the standard black vinyl version repeatedly. Finding different variants can be quite a challenge, so I was thrilled to come across the yellow vinyl at Reckless Records. Additionally, I discovered some interesting Japanese pressings of Queen, Dexter Gordon, and Bill Evans. I might have also acquired a German pressing of The Beatles’ “Revolver,” though I can’t recall if that was this year or last.

Fitzie’s Favourite Concert: The Rolling Stones in Denver, Colorado

After years of anticipation, I finally had the chance to see The Rolling Stones live. I initially purchased tickets for my dad back in 2019, but with the pandemic causing delays, we had to wait almost five years for the show. It was absolutely worth the wait! The Stones delivered an exceptional performance, showcasing their energy and skill, easily surpassing performances from much younger artists. A personal highlight for me was Ronnie Wood’s incredible guitar work. It was also enjoyable to see Keith Richards take the spotlight for a three-song jam while Mick Jagger took a breather. The concert was filled with classics, kicking off with “Sympathy for the Devil,” reminding everyone just how many legendary songs they have.

Other concerts I thoroughly enjoyed included performances by Jack White and Vampire Weekend.

Fitzie’s Least Favourite Concert: The Decemberists in Washington, DC

Perhaps The Decemberists just aren’t my style? I decided to give them a chance after hearing some of their newer songs on the radio. While I found “Burial Ground” to be a highlight of their set, the rest of the concert felt a bit dull. Their lengthy song “Joan In The Garden” didn’t translate well to the live setting.

Most-Played Band: The Grateful Dead

Not much of a surprise here!

Fitzie’s Favourite Radio Station: 88.5M The SoCal Sound

This has been my go-to station since 2018. I was saddened by the departure of my favorite DJ who moved to a station in Chicago, but the great music continues to flow.

Top New Album: “Songs of a Lost World” by The Cure

I previously highlighted this incredible album, showcasing The Cure at their finest.

Top New Song: “Coming to a Hoddle Near You”

Fitzie’s Track of the Day: “Lost Changes” by Beth Gibbons
