Murder, Laughter, and Hollywood: What’s Next for Only Murders in the Building?

“Only Murders in the Building” has received mixed critiques, with some noting its shortcomings in the realm of contemporary TV comedy. Rachel Aroesti from The Guardian highlighted that the series seems to prioritize a star-studded cast and intricate plots over pure comedy. However, she also pointed out that it remains one of the funniest shows currently on air.

The storyline centers around three neighbors and true crime podcasters—Charles, played by Steve Martin, Oliver, portrayed by Martin Short, and Mabel, represented by Selena Gomez. In its fourth season, the plot revolves around the murder of Charles’ stunt double, Sazz, who was shot through his apartment window at the conclusion of the previous season.

As the trio prepares to delve into their new investigation, they receive unexpected news: Paramount executives are fast-tracking a movie adaptation of their successful podcast, with celebrities stepping into their roles. Eugene Levy will play Charles, Zach Galifianakis is set to portray Oliver, and Eva Longoria will take on the role of Mabel.

While Ed Power of The Telegraph recognized that stars playing themselves can often be hit-or-miss, he praised the new cast, calling them entertaining, and noted that the original trio maintains the energetic charm of previous seasons. However, he lamented that Meryl Streep’s return as Oliver’s love interest doesn’t feature enough screen time.

The essence of “Only Murders in the Building” transcends its impressive cast, relying instead on a captivating mystery brimming with twists promising a thrilling season ahead. Ben Dowell from The Times praised the ingenious plot and the dynamic chemistry among the main characters. Nevertheless, he remarked that the familiar tropes are becoming repetitive and that the show struggles to critique Hollywood effectively.

Maddy Mussen from the London Evening Standard noted that Selena Gomez’s portrayal of Mabel appeared somewhat stilted in this season, and there was a lack of character growth for the main trio.

Despite its imperfections, Aroesti concluded that season four of the series approaches a high standard. It remains a rare blend of comedy and drama that is executed remarkably well.

Season four of “Only Murders in the Building” is now available for streaming on Disney+.
