A 45-year-old man has been remanded in custody following a tragic incident on Boxing Day, where he allegedly fatally stabbed a farmer in Batinivuriwai Settlement, Wainunu, Bua, Vanua Levu. Jonasa Matakibau appeared before Magistrate Panapasa Tawake at the Savusavu Magistrate’s Court and now faces a charge of murder.
The case has been moved to the Labasa High Court, with a hearing scheduled for January 6. Reports from the police indicate that the victim, whose name has not been released, was involved in a violent altercation at a bus shelter in the settlement. What initially started as a dispute escalated into a physical confrontation, culminating in a fatal stab wound to the chest.
Emergency services were promptly called, but despite efforts to rush the victim to Wainunu Health Centre, he was declared dead upon arrival.
