Mumbai is set to play a pivotal role in a civil defence mock drill scheduled for May 7, as ordered by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The exercise will take place in key locations such as the Tarapur Atomic Power Plant, the Roha-Nagothane industrial belt, and urban areas including Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, and Pimpri-Chinchwad.

The drill will commence at 4 PM, marked by sirens across various sites, with the primary aim of educating the public on safety measures in the event of war or emergencies. Local authorities, including district administration and response teams from the fire brigade and paramedics, will support the initiative. Trained volunteers will be on hand to provide first aid, manage emergencies, and aid in the evacuation of residents to safety. Officials have reassured the public to remain composed during the exercise and not to panic.

In parallel, railway authorities are conducting security drills at significant stations like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Kurla, utilizing teams from the Railway Protection Force, Government Railway Police, and their canine units. These initiatives reflect a comprehensive approach to safety and preparedness in the region. Hospitals in Mumbai are also ready for any potential scenarios, with local health officials confirming their preparedness.

A large-scale participation is anticipated, with over 10,000 volunteers, including civil defence personnel, NCC cadets, and Home Guard members engaging in the drill across 16 locations in 10 districts throughout Maharashtra. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has highlighted the importance of confidentiality regarding the drill’s details to maintain its efficacy. This initiative is particularly timely, as it coincides with rising tensions between India and Pakistan, underscored by the recent Pahalgam terror attack.

In Pune, designated sites for the drill will include the Council Hall, Panchayat Samiti, and municipal offices in Mulshi and Talegaon. Various stakeholders from civil defence to military, law enforcement, and health sectors will collaborate for a well-coordinated and effective exercise.

This exercise not only enhances public safety awareness but also fosters collaboration among multiple agencies, reinforcing the community’s resilience in the face of crisis.
