MTV VMAs 2024: A Star-Studded Celebration or Just a Musical Mirage?

The MTV Video Music Awards marked a significant milestone this year as they celebrated their 40th anniversary, aiming to honor their legacy in style. The show featured memorable clips from iconic VMA moments, including Madonna and Britney Spears’ kiss in 2003, Beyoncé’s pregnancy announcement in 2011, Michael Jackson with Lisa Marie Presley in 1994, and Taylor Swift’s subway performance in 2009. However, there was a noticeable absence of actual music being played by MTV in 2024.

This year’s ceremony transformed into a grand pop celebration, showcasing stellar performances from artists like Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Karol G, and host Megan Thee Stallion, who humorously redefined VMAs as “Voluptuous Megan Awards.” Taylor Swift emerged as the night’s biggest winner, taking home the show’s first and last awards for “Fortnite,” her collaboration with Post Malone. While fans anticipated an announcement for new music or projects, Taylor instead urged viewers to vote, marking a significant political message shortly after her endorsement of Kamala Harris.

Chappell Roan made a memorable debut with her medieval princess theme, performing “Good Luck, Babe!” and winning Best New Artist. Her emotional acceptance speech touched on her connection with queer fans, resonating deeply with the audience. Sabrina Carpenter delivered an entertaining performance but missed including her hit “Lie to Girls.” She won Song of the Year for “Espresso,” receiving her award from Cyndi Lauper.

Tinashe presented the Best New Artist award with a striking runway walk, capturing attention even without a performance. The show witnessed relentless energy from artists like Karol G, Halsey, and Eminem, who opened the night with a nod to his classic performances. Megan Thee Stallion paid homage to Britney Spears’ famous python dance with her own spin, alongside electrifying performances from various artists, including Anitta and LL Cool J.

Katy Perry was awarded the Video Vanguard honor, marked by a heartfelt speech addressing music industry challenges, particularly for women. She performed a medley of her hits and sparked nostalgia among the audience, echoing her past VMA moments.

Additionally, the show included a humorous segment highlighting minor award winners, with Billie Eilish winning for “Video for Good” six months post-Oscar win for the same song. A quirky Pepsi advertisement featuring a new take on the classic “We Will Rock You” riff added a modern twist to the night.

Carson Daly made a special appearance, reminiscing about his days hosting TRL and the vibrant pop culture discussions it sparked, underscoring the ongoing relevance of music and pop debates nurtured by the VMAs over the years.
