In a significant move to enhance subway efficiency, the MTA has announced that starting in December 2025, the F and M train lines will swap tunnels under the East River during weekdays. This change aims to alleviate delays and reduce overcrowding on one of Queens’ primary transit routes.
Under the new configuration, the M train will utilize the 63rd Street tunnel, which has historically been in use by the F train. This will allow M trains to make weekday stops at stations such as 21st St–Queensbridge, Roosevelt Island, Lexington Ave–63rd St, and 57th St—stops that have long been served exclusively by the F express service. Conversely, F trains will reroute south through the 53rd Street tunnel, and will cease stops at Court Square, Queens Plaza, Fifth Ave, and Lexington Ave–53rd St.
This adjustment is not merely a logistical change; it is part of a broader plan by the MTA to address the complex interlocking systems that cause delays in Long Island City. By rerouting the trains to follow a more straightforward path, the MTA anticipates reducing delays linked to complex switching patterns and easing congestion on busy platforms. NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow explained that reducing the number of lines sharing tracks will lead to improved service reliability.
Riders on Roosevelt Island will likely benefit the most from this change. Currently faced with cramped conditions during rush hours, locals often have to pass by several full F trains before being able to board. The introduction of the M train to this route is expected to improve conditions considerably, as it will originate from a less congested area in Queens, making boarding more manageable.
The changes will be implemented from approximately 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on weekdays, while F and M trains will return to their existing routes during evenings and weekends. The MTA is actively engaging with local stakeholders to gather feedback, and initial reactions have been encouraging.
This subway modification not only promises to enhance the daily commutes of those in Queens but could also serve as a template for future improvements within the city’s transit system, bringing hope for smoother and more efficient travel for all riders. Updated signage and subway maps are also in the works to help commuters navigate the new system seamlessly.
