MSG Urges UN-Guided Talks on New Caledonia’s Path to Self-Determination

The Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) has strongly reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the United Nations Fourth Committee’s resolution regarding Kanaky–New Caledonia, which was adopted on October 16, 2025, in New York. In light of this resolution, the MSG has called on all relevant parties to engage in peaceful, good-faith dialogue characterized by mutual respect and in accordance with the principles of the United Nations, all within the framework of the Nouméa Accord.

The MSG has pointed out that the recently negotiated Bougival Accord, reaching discussions in July 2025, remains only partially endorsed due to differing opinions among key stakeholders involved in the negotiations. Internal consultations on this matter are currently ongoing.

Emphasizing the urgency of continued dialogue, the MSG highlighted the critical need for mutual respect and inclusive negotiations aimed at achieving a comprehensive agreement about the institutional future of New Caledonia that aligns with the aspirations of all involved parties. The MSG advocates for a dialogue that evolves in the spirit of harmony and respect, helping foster a conducive environment for the territory’s peaceful journey toward self-determination.

In a statement from the MSG Secretariat, there was a reiteration of solidarity with the Front de Libération Nationale Kanak et Socialiste (FLNKS) and a continued commitment to support La Cause Kanak through various multilateral platforms, including United Nations-established processes such as the C-24. This alignment with FLNKS also mirrors the commitment of the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders to ensure the voices of all stakeholders are heard and considered in future discussions.

Looking toward the future, the MSG encourages all parties to maintain a collaborative spirit in good faith, focusing on sustained dialogue to ensure a peaceful and just political transition. This commitment reflects a hopeful trajectory for New Caledonia, as stakeholders work collectively to navigate their complex political landscape and address long-standing grievances, ultimately fostering a more unified and autonomous future for the region.
