The Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) has renewed its commitment to supporting the United Nations Fourth Committee’s resolution regarding Kanaky–New Caledonia, which was adopted on October 16, 2025, in New York. Following this resolution, the MSG is urging all parties involved to engage in peaceful, constructive dialogue marked by mutual respect, aligned with United Nations principles and the framework of the Nouméa Accord.
The MSG has also noted the ongoing discussions regarding the Bougival Accord, which remain only partially endorsed due to varying opinions among key stakeholders. Internal consultations are currently underway to address these differences.
Highlighting the pressing need for continued dialogue, the MSG emphasized the importance of mutual respect and inclusive negotiations aimed at establishing a comprehensive agreement that addresses the institutional future of New Caledonia and reflects the aspirations of all involved parties. They advocate for a dialogue that fosters harmony and respect, creating a supportive environment for the territory’s path to self-determination.
In a statement from the MSG Secretariat, solidarity with the Front de Libération Nationale Kanak et Socialiste (FLNKS) was reaffirmed, showing continued support for La Cause Kanak through various multilateral avenues, including United Nations-established processes like the C-24. This partnership with the FLNKS mirrors the commitment of the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders to ensure that all stakeholders’ voices are acknowledged in future discussions.
Looking ahead, the MSG encourages all parties to embrace a spirit of collaboration in good faith, emphasizing sustained dialogue to facilitate a peaceful and just political transition. This commitment reflects a hopeful trajectory for New Caledonia, as stakeholders endeavor to collectively navigate their intricate political landscape and address long-standing grievances, ultimately paving the way for a more united and autonomous future for the region.
