Mountaineers Seek Roaring Support as Rivals Penn State Arrive

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia’s players and coaching staff are urging Mountaineer fans to create an electrifying atmosphere during today’s sold-out game against Penn State. Eddie Vesterinen, a newcomer to American football rivalries, is keenly aware of the significance of a passionate crowd in Milan Puskar Stadium. Having played in front of over 110,000 fans at Beaver Stadium last year, he knows the impact noise can have on game dynamics.

Vesterinen commented that last year’s disruptive noise affected their communication on the field. He emphasized the need for fans to be fully engaged, stating, “If that happens, they won’t be able to hear anything on offense. We have to bring all the loudness, all the energy. That will help us on defense.”

Historically, the rivalry games have witnessed intense crowd participation, with unforgettable moments such as quarterback Jeff Hostetler’s game-winning touchdown against Pitt in 1983, which was so loud it echoed into nearby Westover. West Virginia ended a nearly 30-year losing streak against Penn State in 1984, a game marked by roaring support from fans.

Head Coach Neal Brown encouraged supporters to increase their volume when Penn State has possession, while suggesting they take a moment of quiet when West Virginia’s offense is on the field, only to erupt once the team scores. Offensive tackle added to this plea, urging the crowd to make it challenging for the opposing offense while maintaining a supportive atmosphere for their own team.

The anticipation builds for today’s showdown, with a kickoff scheduled for noon and the game set to be broadcast nationally on FOX. The pre-game festivities start at 10 a.m. with the FOX Big Noon Kickoff show, leading into audio coverage from the Mountaineer Tailgate Show at 9 a.m. The game also coincides with the “Stripe the Stadium” initiative, where fans are encouraged to wear the appropriate colors. Furthermore, members of the 1984 team will be honored during today’s event, adding to the game’s significance.
