Mountain Community Unites for Change on Giving Tuesday

HAZARD, Ky. – The National Day of Giving, commonly known as “Giving Tuesday,” is celebrated annually on the first Tuesday following Thanksgiving. Established in 2012, this day is dedicated to encouraging acts of kindness and philanthropy worldwide. This year, the community in the mountains is poised to reap the benefits of this generous spirit.

Mindy Miller, the Director of Development and Communications for the Housing Development Alliance (HDA), emphasized the significance of this day for their fundraising efforts, stating, “As a nonprofit organization, the way we fund everything that we do is through grants and donations. It’s crucial for us to receive funding today.”

The HDA is tirelessly working to rebuild homes lost to the devastating floods two years ago. So far, they have successfully rebuilt 31 houses out of an estimated 500 that were destroyed. Miller noted that contributions are utilized immediately for essential materials like nails, shingles, and flooring, highlighting the direct impact of donor generosity on the community.

On a similar note, Carrie McCall, Corps Officer for the Salvation Army in Middlesboro, remarked that “Giving Tuesday” serves as a reminder of the true essence of the holiday season, especially after a weekend filled with shopping and sales. The Salvation Army provides multiple services, including daily meals for the homeless, utility and rent assistance, and food through their pantry.

McCall pointed out that their organization relies entirely on individual donations, receiving no government funding, making these contributions vital for their year-round support. With an ambitious goal of raising $100,000 this season, she expressed confidence in the community’s willingness to help.

HDA set a target of raising $1,500 for “Giving Tuesday” and by the evening, they had surpassed this goal, bringing in $1,680. Both Miller and McCall stressed the importance of every contribution, reinforcing the idea that each dollar can make a difference in their initiatives.

This “Giving Tuesday” not only highlights the community’s resilience and the spirit of giving but also offers a hopeful opportunity for collective action and support, demonstrating how every donation can lead to meaningful change.
