Mount Vernon is gearing up for its beloved annual Salute to Freedom Fourth of July Celebration, set to take place at Mount Vernon Outland Airport. This year marks the 39th installment of this cherished event, which promises an evening filled with food, fun, and fireworks, all free of charge for attendees.
Angela Schrum, the Mt. Vernon Tourism Director, emphasized the significance of the celebration as not only a festive occasion but also a tribute to those who have served in the military. “The 39th Annual Salute to Freedom is more than just a celebration — it’s a heartfelt tribute to the men and women who have served our country,” said Schrum. Mayor John Lewis echoed this sentiment, expressing excitement for the event and anticipation of great attendance, provided that the weather cooperates.
The festivities will kick off at 5 p.m. on July 4, featuring free admission and parking. This year, the Salute to Freedom will coincide with the Market Days flea market and vendor fair, offering a wide array of local crafts and unique goods. In addition, a variety of food vendors will be on hand, including favorites like Billy Bob’s BBQ and Uncle Joe Sauces, alongside numerous pay-to-play activities for children, such as inflatables and laser tag.
Live entertainment will begin at 5 p.m. with a DJ, leading into a performance by Edwin Linson at 6:30 p.m., culminating in a spectacular fireworks display at approximately 9 p.m. The Mt. Vernon Lions Club will also provide shuttle services for attendees needing transportation back to their vehicles following the event.
As a reminder, personal fireworks and pets will not be permitted on the grounds during the festivities.
