Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton is gearing up for a significant challenge as he prepares to face the Oregon Ducks in Thursday’s Orange Bowl. Thanks to an extended break following his team’s decisive 34-7 victory over BYU in the Big 12 Championship on December 6, Morton has had time to recover from injuries that have plagued him throughout the season, particularly a hairline fracture in his right fibula that he sustained against Kansas in October.

Arriving in Fort Lauderdale, Morton assessed his recovery, stating that his leg now feels “about 70%” and is closer to 80-85% readiness for the upcoming game. This added mobility could significantly enhance Texas Tech’s offensive strategy, particularly in executing plays and scoring in the red zone, areas where they have been highly effective this season. Despite not being renowned for his running ability, Morton has demonstrated a talent for extending plays with his legs, which could pose a challenge for Oregon’s defense.

Morton has a history of injuries, having previously undergone shoulder surgery last offseason. He also injured his lower right leg in the season opener and missed two games, including Texas Tech’s only loss against Arizona State. However, since his return, the Red Raiders have gone undefeated, earning the No. 4 seed in the College Football Playoff with a record of 12-1.

Texas Tech’s offensive line has played a crucial role in Morton’s success, providing him ample time to get the ball to his playmakers. The team has been explosive this season, tying for second nationally with 90 plays of over 20 yards, while Oregon leads with 91. Morton has thrown for 2,643 yards, 22 touchdowns, and only four interceptions this year, highlighting his effectiveness as a pocket passer.

Although Morton’s mobility has been limited due to injury—evidenced by his negative rushing yardage of minus-81—his time off seems to have rekindled his agility. Offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich noted that Morton’s accuracy improved during rehab practices while he was wearing a protective boot.

As Texas Tech prepares for the matchup, Morton acknowledged Oregon’s formidable defense, which has successfully contained other dual-threat quarterbacks this season. Yet, he remains optimistic about exploiting weaknesses. He emphasized the importance of sticking to their game plan and not overextending themselves, stating, “It’s just doing the simple things… Playing our standard football.”

With both teams boasting impressive records of 12-1, the matchup promises to be a thrilling contest as Texas Tech takes on Oregon in what is expected to be an action-packed Orange Bowl.
