Morgan’s Last Kick: A Soccer Legend Bids Farewell

Alex Morgan, a revered figure in U.S. Women’s National Team history and a prominent star in women’s soccer worldwide, has officially announced her retirement from professional soccer. The 35-year-old forward revealed her pregnancy with her second child, and she will take to the field for one last match on Sunday, September 8, when the San Diego Wave faces the North Carolina Courage at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California.

Reflecting on her journey, Morgan emphasized the deep connections forged within the team, stating, “I grew up on this team, it was so much more than soccer.” She joined the USWNT in late 2009 at the age of 20, and her tenure spanned over 15 years filled with friendships, achievements, and a commitment to advancing women’s sports. Morgan expressed her honor at having represented the national team, crediting her teammates and fans for her growth and success.

Throughout her illustrious career, Morgan made an indelible mark on women’s soccer, scoring an impressive 123 goals for the USWNT, placing her fifth on the all-time scoring list, along with 53 assists, which ranks ninth. Her presence contributed to a remarkable team record of 177 wins, 15 losses, and 32 draws during matches she played. Notably, the USWNT maintained an undefeated record in the 86 matches where she scored, winning 76 and drawing 10.

Morgan’s scoring prowess extended across 32 different international opponents, with her most notable contributions coming against Japan, where she netted 12 goals. Her last appearance in a U.S. uniform took place on June 4, 2024, against Korea Republic, and her final goal was scored against Argentina during the Concacaf W Gold Cup.

Known for her explosive speed and dynamic playing style, Morgan first made headlines in 2010 when she scored her inaugural goal against China PR. She rapidly became a vital figure for the U.S., famously scoring a crucial goal in the 2011 Women’s World Cup qualifying playoff against Italy. Morgan’s career truly took off at the 2011 World Cup in Germany, where she played a key role in the tournament, ultimately helping the U.S. secure the gold medal at the 2012 Olympics with a legendary last-minute goal against Canada.
