Moody’s Walk-Off Debut Lifts Bears to Dramatic Win

Jake Moody made a remarkable debut for the Chicago Bears on Monday night, kicking a 38-yard field goal as time expired to secure a thrilling 25-24 victory over the Washington Commanders. Elevated from the practice squad just hours before the game due to an injury to regular kicker Cairo Santos, Moody stepped up when it mattered most.

Santos, who sustained a right thigh injury during Chicago’s Week 4 win at Las Vegas, was a full participant in practice but ultimately couldn’t contribute during the game. Bears head coach Ben Johnson explained the decision to start Moody, highlighting that Santos was not feeling up to par.

In an impressive first outing, Moody became the first Bears kicker to achieve a walk-off field goal on his debut. After his game-winning kick sailed through the uprights at Northwest Stadium, his teammates celebrated by lifting him in joy, a moment that left the 25-year-old feeling elated. “It’s a pretty cool series of events,” Moody reflected. “A couple days ago, I didn’t know I was playing, and to get lifted up by my teammates is an amazing feeling.”

Originally drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Moody’s journey has been anything but straightforward. After missing two field goals in his debut against the Seattle Seahawks, he was released and subsequently signed to the Bears’ practice squad ahead of Week 2.

Despite being new to the team, some players were just getting to know Moody on the sidelines during the game. Running back D’Andre Swift commented, “First time I’ve spoken to him… Just proud of him.”

Moody didn’t just contribute the winning kick; he finished the game with a 4-for-5 success rate, making field goals from 47, 48, and 41 yards in challenging wet and windy conditions. His performance closely mirrored the Bears’ previous game, where they also triumphed 25-24, demonstrating a newfound ability to clinch close contests.

In his debut, Moody leaned on Santos for guidance, crediting him as a valuable resource in understanding the wind conditions and field surface. “I’m very glad that we did travel with him,” Moody said.

As the game progressed, Moody faced challenges, including a blocked field goal that directly led to a touchdown for Washington. However, the Bears continued to rally, with Swift making an explosive 55-yard touchdown catch that narrowed Washington’s lead.

Bears quarterback Caleb Williams expressed the team’s growing confidence in closing out games, acknowledging that while winning by larger margins would be ideal, their experience in tight situations was invaluable.

Sadly, the Bears might face another setback, as wide receiver DJ Moore was taken to a nearby hospital for precautionary medical evaluation after experiencing discomfort during the game. Despite his injury, Moore contributed three receptions for 42 yards and two rushing attempts for 10 yards.

Moody’s debut not only showcased his talent and resilience but also highlighted the Bears’ determination as they build momentum for the remainder of the season, fostering hope among fans for continued success.
