MONTEREY COUNTY — The County of Monterey announced on Thursday that partial Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP/CalFresh) benefits are set to be issued next week after receiving federal authorization to release a portion of the funds.
Maia Carroll, the county’s public information officer, stated, “The Federal government has authorized partial SNAP benefits be issued and the State is working to begin issuing partial CalFresh benefits sometime next week — the week of November 10, 2025.”
In light of these developments, SNAP/CalFresh recipients are encouraged to stay updated as more details emerge. Residents seeking assistance with their benefits or needing food resources can reach out to 211 or contact the County of Monterey Department of Social Services at 877-410-8823. Additionally, in-person assistance is available at county offices located in King City (116 Broadway St.), Seaside (1281 Broadway Ave.), and Salinas (1000 S. Main St., Suite 216).
To further support the community amid this delay, the County of Monterey has committed $150,000 to bolster local food banks. This one-time financial allocation aims to assist those who rely on CalFresh benefits during these challenging times. “The County is encouraging partner jurisdictions to consider joining us and give if they can,” Carroll added.
Despite the current disruptions, the Department of Social Services is actively encouraging eligible residents to apply for CalFresh. Historically, applications tend to increase in late fall and winter as seasonal workers in agriculture and hospitality face reduced hours or layoffs. However, the county has recently noted a decline in applications.
Currently, around 51,000 individuals in Monterey County receive CalFresh benefits, with approximately 29,000 of them being children. Many of the beneficiaries are employed yet still depend on the program to fulfill their food needs, according to officials from the county. This situation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by families in the community and underscores the importance of continued support for food assistance initiatives.
