Moe Wagner has signed a one-year deal worth $5 million to return to the Orlando Magic, as reported by a league source. Wagner enjoyed a breakout season last year before suffering a torn left ACL in December. This injury led the Magic to decline his $11 million option for the upcoming season, making him an unrestricted free agent.
Wagner’s return coincides with the signing of veteran guard Tyus Jones, who played for the Suns last season. With Wagner back, the Magic now have 13 players under standard contracts but find themselves close to the first apron spending threshold set at $195,945,000 by the league’s new collective bargaining agreement. This means their spending is constrained because they’ve likely used part of the non-taxpayer mid-level exception to secure Jones.
Despite being capped at this financial limit, the Magic have also signed rookie player Richardson to a contract and plan to welcome second-round draft pick Noah Penda soon. The retention of Wagner is crucial as the team still holds his Bird rights, allowing them the flexibility to re-sign him.
Wagner is currently focused on his rehabilitation, aiming to be ready for the next season. He expressed optimism about his recovery, stating, “That’s part of the rehab — you go day-by-day… I’m pretty positive-minded toward that.”
During his limited time last season, Wagner made a strong impression, averaging 12.9 points and 4.9 rebounds in just 30 games, with notable performances including a career-high 32 points in a game against New York. His contributions extend beyond the stats; Wagner has become an integral part of the team’s culture under coach Jamahl Mosley, emphasizing the importance of hard work and resilience.
As the Magic gear up for the upcoming season, Wagner’s commitment and positive mindset could play a vital role in their pursuit of success.
