Davion Mitchell, a guard who has recently become a free agent, is set to re-sign with the Miami Heat for a two-year deal worth $24 million, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. This contract is fully guaranteed, underscoring the Heat’s commitment to the player.
Originally drafted ninth overall in 2021 by the Sacramento Kings, Mitchell spent his initial three seasons in Sacramento, where he built a reputation for his tenacious defense but faced challenges on offense, averaging only 7.4 points and 2.8 assists in his 227 appearances. His shooting percentages stood at .434 from the field, .327 from three-point range, and .703 from the free-throw line.
However, after being traded to Toronto last summer and subsequently moving to Miami, Mitchell’s performance improved significantly. In Miami, he became a full-time starter, posting averages of 10.3 points and 5.3 assists per game while showcasing an improved shooting line of .504/.447/.702 over 30 regular-season games. His postseason performance was even more impressive, where he averaged 15.2 points and 6.5 assists while shooting 59.3% from the field and 52.0% from beyond the arc during play-in and playoff games.
Mitchell maintained his defensive prowess throughout the 2024/25 season, ranking among the top five players for opposing field goal percentages among those contesting at least 500 shots.
Earlier this week, the Heat had extended a qualifying offer of $8.74 million to Mitchell, making him a restricted free agent. He chose to negotiate directly with Miami rather than explore other options on the market.
With Mitchell’s new contract, the Heat may need to consider adjustments to their roster, potentially leading to a decision regarding Duncan Robinson, who has an early termination option worth $19.9 million. Waiving Robinson could create significant cap savings for Miami.
