Mitch Barnhart, the long-serving athletics director at the University of Kentucky, is reportedly poised to announce his retirement in the near future. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the 66-year-old Barnhart has been at the helm of UK athletics for an impressive 24 years, marking a significant period of growth and success for the department.
Under Barnhart’s leadership, the University of Kentucky experienced notable achievements across various sports, particularly in baseball, softball, volleyball, and women’s basketball. His contributions to the athletics program were recognized in 2019 when he was honored as the Division I Athletics Director of the Year by Sports Business Journal.
Barnhart, who took over the role in 2002, succeeded Larry Ivy and became the longest-tenured AD at a Power 4 school. His career began at Oregon State, where he served as athletics director from 1998 to 2002 before moving to Kentucky.
While Barnhart is set to step down, he holds a clause in his contract that allows him to transition into a special assistant role to UK President Eli Capilouto, which means he will not be leaving the university entirely just yet.
Looking ahead, the search for Barnhart’s successor is anticipated to focus on internal candidates, likely from his current staff, as the university aims to maintain the momentum built during his tenure.
