A mistrial was declared on Monday in the high-profile case involving former University of Miami football player Rashaun Jones, who faced accusations of murdering his teammate Bryan Pata in a case that has haunted the storied program since Pata was killed in 2006. The jury in Miami-Dade County had been engaged in deliberations since Thursday but ultimately could not reach a unanimous verdict.
After receiving a note from the jurors indicating they were at an impasse, Miami-Dade Circuit Court Judge Cristina Miranda announced the mistrial. The emotional toll of the decision was palpable, particularly for Pata’s mother, who was visibly distressed as she covered her face.
Prosecutors have expressed their intention to retry Jones, and Judge Miranda has instructed both sides to prepare for a hearing on setting a new trial date. The specifics of the jury’s decision, including whether there was a lean toward a guilty or not guilty vote, were not disclosed in court.

Bryan Pata, who was just 22 years old at the time of his death, was an emerging star on the Miami Hurricanes football team and was considered a strong NFL prospect. In contrast, Jones, now 40, had minimal playing time and reportedly felt overshadowed by Pata’s rising fame.
Jones was arrested on August 19, 2021, just short of the 15th anniversary of the shooting, which had long been a matter of speculation within the South Florida football community. The prosecution’s case faced criticism from the defense, which argued that the evidence presented was insufficient and suggested that community pressure influenced the decision to charge Jones.
Although prosecutors relied on a witness who testified to seeing Jones in the vicinity of the crime scene and tracking data from a cellphone tower close to the area, the defense contended that physical evidence linking Jones directly to the murder was lacking.
