A manhunt is underway for Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, an asylum seeker who was mistakenly released from prison after serving a sentence for sexual assault. Kebatu, who was sentenced to 12 months for the sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl and a woman in Epping, was set to be deported immediately upon his release from HMP Chelmsford.
The Ethiopian national was found guilty of multiple charges, including two counts of sexual assault, attempted sexual assault, inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity, and harassment without violence. His release has provoked public outrage and prompted widespread protests, particularly at the Bell Hotel in Epping, where he was housed.
Following his error-prone release on Friday, Kebatu boarded a train to London, raising serious concerns regarding public safety. Essex Police confirmed that they were informed of the release error just before he boarded a train at Chelmsford Railway Station. He was seen on security footage traveling towards London, where a coordinated manhunt involving Essex Police, the Metropolitan Police, and British Transport Police has been launched.
Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary David Lammy expressed his anger, stating, “I’m livid on behalf of the public that this individual who committed a sexual assault on a young minor and a woman is at large tonight.” The father of the young girl attacked by Kebatu also voiced his frustration over the situation, describing a profound sense of betrayal by the justice system.
The Prison Service is conducting an investigation into the incident and confirmed that releases in error are rare and taken seriously. Yet, crime commentator Danny Shadow reported that such incidents are not uncommon, highlighting that 87 prisoners were released in error last year alone.
Political leaders have called for urgency in capturing Kebatu and ensuring he is deported, with Sir Keir Starmer labeling the circumstances surrounding his release as “totally unacceptable.” MP Marie Goldman emphasized the need for a thorough public inquiry after the manhunt concludes, citing significant dangers posed to the public.
