Christopher “Kit” Bond, a significant figure in Missouri politics, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 86. Over his extensive four-decade career, Bond transitioned from a relatively liberal reformer to a staunch conservative, ultimately serving as the governor of Missouri and a four-term U.S. senator.

Known for his passionate advocacy for Missouri, Bond was dubbed the state’s “King of Pork” for his knack at securing federal funding for local projects, even amidst growing criticism of government spending. He once humorously boasted to critics, saying he would provide his own barbecue sauce for the next wave of earmarks. Missouri’s current governor, Mike Kehoe, praised Bond’s contributions to the state and ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in his honor.

Born in St. Louis and raised in Mexico, Missouri, Bond earned his education at prestigious institutions, including Princeton and the University of Virginia. Bond’s political journey began in 1968 with a failed congressional bid. However, he bounced back, winning the office of state auditor in 1970 and later became Missouri’s youngest governor in 1972 at 33 years old. His governorship focused on modernization and public service reforms.

Despite facing political challenges such as a split within his party in the 1970s and a loss in his re-election bid, Bond’s political career flourished after defeating Democrat Joseph Teasdale in a rematch for governor in 1980. He later served in the U.S. Senate, where he effectively raised funds for various projects, enhancing the lives of many Missourians.

Bond’s tenure in the Senate was marked by his defense of controversial policies and a generally conservative voting record, which included support for the Iraq War and nominations to the Supreme Court. His legislative efforts benefited urban areas of Missouri through funding for public housing and education, as well as rural regions through infrastructure support.

After announcing his retirement from politics in 2009, Bond transitioned to a role in lobbying, continuing his involvement in public affairs.

Bond’s passing marks the end of an era for Missouri politics, with his legacy influencing future generations of legislators and public servants in the state. His work contributed to the strengthening of the Missouri Republican Party and left a lasting impact on the political landscape.
