A missing persons report has been filed for Manny Abarca, a legislator in Jackson County, and his two-year-old son, Luca, according to the Shawnee Police Department. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has also been notified and individual reports have been created for both Abarca and his son.
Alexis, Abarca’s wife, shared on social media that she last saw her son five days ago on Wednesday, May 28, and Abarca the following day. The couple was last together at Abarca’s father’s home in Shawnee, where they met to change vehicles. Alexis noted that an “incident” occurred, prompting a call to the police.
In a response to KCTV5 via email, Abarca stated, “It has come to my attention that a ‘missing persons’ report has been filed erroneously concerning my son and me. Please rest assured we are not missing and we are both safe and healthy.” Despite this assurance, the Shawnee Police have confirmed the active investigation into their well-being, although they haven’t yet verified their safety in person.
The police spokesperson remarked that while there is no immediate indication of danger, the investigation is ongoing as a precautionary measure. Alexis expressed concern, stating that her son requires medication she currently possesses and described her feelings as those of a desperate mother seeking help.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation clarified that while they oversee the missing persons clearinghouse, they do not typically get involved in the investigations of such cases, directing inquiries back to local authorities. KCTV5 has reached out to Abarca’s office for further details regarding the situation.
This situation highlights the growing concern for the welfare of children and the responsibilities that come with caring for them. It’s crucial for families to communicate effectively and ensure that all parties are informed to avoid misunderstandings like this one. The investigation remains open, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
